The resilience of the kids might be the most positive and remarkable fact from these 12 months. They’re learning and growing like always, in spite of some pretty steep challenges. We are so proud of them!
Jayden: Mrs G and Mrs Anchor describe him as eager, happy and he "loves life." She remarked that he always has an "I can" attitude, he never says "I can't" and always tries even when something is obviously unfamiliar. He raises his hand and contributes readily in the group, and although he isn't the best with taking turns that it always comes from a place of enthusiasm. He also works best on crafts with a partner and prefers to not play alone. Mrs. G was extremely encouraging and also showed great skill as a teacher, already implementing a number of special tactics for Jayden since he has come into the class mid-year and without any previous school experience. We are so thankful he's in such a nurturing environment! She agrees with our plan to send him to Derry preschool again next year for an extra year of learning and social, emotional and academic readiness before kindergarten.
Jacob: Mrs. G reported that Jacob earned more 5's (out of 5) than any other boy in the class, and only one girl (his beloved, Jo) earned as many too. He always "hits the ground running," and she remarked that she never sees him bossy (ironic!) She has to encourage him to be assertive and he doesn't like to be the center of attention. Jacob always follows instructions the first time they're given and has become more/fully independent since the year began. She thinks he'll do very well in Kindergarten, and he's getting registered tomorrow!!
yes, he's still drawing mostly excavators, but did do this rendition of Toothless for his big bro recently too.
Nicholas: Nick is also doing tremendously well given all the challenges this year has thrown at him. There's no doubt that Mrs. Kelly's dramatic teaching style (for example, with his pencil being a rocket that blasts off between words to create the spaces between words) has engaged Nick in a special way. She describes Nick as always kind and compassionate towards his classmates, and she likes his sense of humor. He continues to be scoring proficiently at the benchmark and is starting to read (on level 2 books already)! Mrs. Kelly feels he's not as "poky," and she continues to be amazed by his creativity and art. Below are several of the sentences and drawings he's done recently which are really funny and well done.

Quote of the week (Nick) "not on my watch" - picking up after the "careless" construction men (his word) on the nearby property under construction. Jacob says that when he's a grownup construction man he will not litter.

Lukas: also had a particularly good semester! He continues to devour books, three at a time, and Mrs. Bowser was particularly impressed with his writing. She remarked that she still has to remind him to slow down and relook at things before turning them in (he must have gotten his haste from me!) I think he's really happy to be back in the school building full time and seems to be more focused on school than he used to be. He's also becoming very independent. He also got straight O's (outstanding), even in the characteristics of a good learner!! It's fun watching his confidence increase and his curiosity blossom. At home, he continues to shine with gentleness, patience and compassion when his brothers are struggling, which is not only a good example but also a huge blessing to us all. His approach makes me a better person and mother.
