As long as Mike and I have been going to Calvary UMC, we've been attending the 8:30am service. It just suits us the best. And having kids hasn't changed that. I truly cannot remember the last time one of our three wasn't up around 6am. Most days it's Nick, occasionally Lukas, rarely Jacob. When Lukas was an only child, he almost always got up in the 5 o'clock hour. So, we've been early risers since we've been parents. And that makes it easy to just get out of the house and to church early, there's just no reason to wait until 11am. But whenever holiday's come along, we have to decide which service to get to. Neither of us had ever been to a Sunrise Service at Calvary but both thought it might be a fun change of pace. This service began at 0630 and since we now live about 25 minutes away from Calvary, that meant we might have to wake up the kids. But, we figured it was worth a shot. So we packed up the night before and told Lukas that he wouldn't be able to open his easter basket until after church; he agreed. So, on Easter morning we both woke up around 5:30 and got the kids up at 5:50. We threw clothes on them and got out the door. We made it just in time! It was a gorgeous service at a nearby cemetery. Being in the cemetery was a good chance to talk again about the real reason for the season and Jesus rising from the tomb. Lukas is well versed in all of this by now and it's really pretty fun listening to him tell the story.
All 3 kids were relatively well behaved (sleepily sucking on milk and eating raisins and cheerios! while appreciating the Easter Miracle ;)). The service was beautiful, as it was a perfectly cool spring morning and the sunrise was just beautiful. The music was acapella and the sermon by Pastor Jeff was short and sweet. We really enjoyed it! And might make it an annual tradition!
After church, we headed back home and had chocolate for breakfast ;) The kids got reeses bunnies and books in their baskets (except Jacob who got "cruchies" since we don't do chocolate before the first birthday for our kids!), plus one little extra (markers, bunny ears and a rubber ducky). It was simple but they were thrilled... and ingested toxic amounts of chocolate throughout the day! Shortly thereafter, we headed to Grandma Pfeiffer's for the Easter dinner and enjoyed seeing several aunts and cousins. As always, the holiday was a reminder of our blessings.
